Israeli Hospital Strike Kills 15, Including Journalists

3 Mins read

A fatal Israeli raid on Nasser Hospital in Gaza on Monday killed at least 15 individuals, including three reporters, in one of the most publicized cases of civilian casualties since Israel stepped up its ground attack last week. The attack was made at a time when tensions are ratcheted up, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration considering a new ceasefire proposal while, at the same time, continuing its most intense military campaign in Gaza City since the war started almost two years ago.
Journalists Among the Dead
Palestinian health authorities said the strike targeted a part of Nasser Hospital in Gaza City, claiming the lives of civilians and medical workers along with media professionals. Reuters verified that one of its contractors, photographer Hatem Khaled, died in the attack. His death underscores the increased risks to journalists in Gaza, with many working under desolate conditions to cover the conflict.
Since the war broke out in October 2023, watchdog groups tracking the media believe that scores of journalists and photographers have been killed, which makes this conflict one of the most deadly for journalists in decades. Media freedom activists criticized Monday’s attack, calling on Israel to do more to prevent civilian and media losses.
The hospital strike came on the heels of Israel’s declaration of the first phase of its operation to take over Gaza City. The Israeli army mobilized tens of thousands of reservists and deployed additional troops into northern Gaza, indicating its resolve to destroy Hamas’s remaining strongholds.
The escalation comes after last week’s clashes between Israeli soldiers and Hamas militants, which Netanyahu’s office said was a “turning point” in Israel’s war. Israeli officials state that the extended offensive is needed to defeat Hamas militarily and to end future attacks on Israeli civilians.
As per the military spokesmen, Israel already holds about 75 percent of the Gaza Strip. The objective of the ongoing operation, they claimed, is to gain complete control over Gaza City, the largest and most populous urban area in the territory. However, critics say that such an advance threatens disastrous civilian displacement and humanitarian collapse.
Ceasefire Proposal Under Debate
The new military operation is while Israel weighs an international truce plan aimed at halting the fighting after almost two years of war. United States, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators have pressed both sides to agree on a temporary cease-fire to permit humanitarian aid into Gaza and to start talks on a larger settlement.
Hamas, in Telegram statement, blamed Netanyahu for intentionally blocking the ceasefire negotiations. “Netanyahu’s refusal to respect the mediators’ offer confirms that he is the actual obstructionist of any deal,” the group stated, characterizing the Israeli leader’s position as one of prolonging war for political purposes.
Even as calls for restraint grow, Netanyahu is under enormous pressure from within his ruling coalition to oppose any halt in hostilities. Far-right elements of his government insist that to stop now would waste military momentum and leave Hamas half-complete.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, one of Netanyahu’s cabinet members with a prominent far-right voice, announced last week approval of a contentious settlement scheme in the occupied West Bank. The action drew widespread international condemnation as a move that works to undercut any hope for an independent Palestinian state.
Smotrich and others have consistently called on Netanyahu to advance not only the Gaza war effort, but also policies potentially leading to annexation of occupied territories. They have given Netanyahu political cover that made it hard for him to agree to a ceasefire without suffering criticism from his own ruling coalition.
While this is happening, most of Israel’s closest allies, among them the United States and nations in Europe, have warned against pushing further into Gaza City. Diplomats say the humanitarian cost, already appalling, may worsen and potentially isolate Israel further on the international scene.
Humanitarian Toll Mounts
Palestinian authorities report that tens of thousands of citizens have been displaced in the last few weeks as Israel ramped up its bombardments. With Gaza’s medical system already under pressure, the bombing of Nasser Hospital contributes to the escalating crisis. Humanitarian groups cite deficits in medicine, electricity, and clean water, conditions that deteriorated each time new rounds of fighting erupted.
The United Nations has continually appealed for the safeguarding of hospitals, schools, and shelters, saying strikes against civilian infrastructure risk being war crimes under international humanitarian law. Monday’s attack has sparked renewed debate over whether Israel is acting sufficiently to limit civilian casualties, even as it hunts Hamas militants who tend to operate from within cities.
Almost Two Years of Fighting
The ongoing war can be traced back to October 2023, when Hamas terrorists made an unprecedented in-depth attack within Israel, slaughtering hundreds and taking several hostages. Israel retaliated with a massive military campaign which has since evolved into one of the longest and most devastating wars in the region’s recent history.
Despite multiple international attempts at brokering ceasefires, most agreements have been short-lived, breaking down amid mutual accusations of violations. As of August 2025, Israel maintains control over much of Gaza but has not eliminated Hamas’s leadership or operational capabilities.
The attack on Nasser Hospital highlights the perilous course of the war, with civilians, journalists, and medics growing ever-more exposed to the crossfire. As Netanyahu’s cabinet remains torn between international calls for a ceasefire and internal calls for escalation, the coming weeks may decide whether the war will finally gain some respite or continue to run ever-deeper.
For the time being, the deaths at Nasser Hospital are another dark milestone in a war that has killed thousands and does not appear to be ending anytime soon.
