Speaking to party supporters, Lalu Prasad Yadav accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of spreading misinformation and making unfulfilled promises to Bihar’s electorate. Referring pointedly to the PM’s recent string of election rallies across the state, Yadav quipped, “Yeh toh jhooth ka mausam hai—Modiji sirf jhooth bolne aate hain Bihar mein.” (Translation: “It is a season of lies—Modi only comes to Bihar to tell falsehoods.”)
The RJD leader’s attack comes at a crucial juncture, as political temperatures soar and major party leaders traverse the state to shore up votes. Yadav’s remarks follow Modi’s repeated claims of development and welfare projects in Bihar under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
Political Context: War of Words Escalates
Modi’s Development Pitch
On June 7, Prime Minister Modi addressed a massive rally in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, highlighting the Centre’s achievements, including infrastructure upgrades, expressway projects, and the expansion of digital and welfare schemes. “Bihar is on the path of progress. My government has ensured that every poor household benefits,” Modi stated at the rally, as reported by The Hindu.
Opposition’s Counter-Attack
However, opposition leaders say the ground reality is starkly different. “There is a wide gulf between what is promised and what is delivered,” Lalu Yadav told reporters after his speech. Drawing attention to issues such as unemployment, inflation, and persistent poverty in rural Bihar, the RJD chief alleged that BJP leaders use election campaigns “to mislead, not to serve.”
Congress spokesperson Shakti Singh Gohil, a key INDIA bloc ally, echoed Lalu’s sentiments, saying, “These extravagant claims do not match the lived experiences of Bihar’s youth and farmers.”
Key Election Issues in Bihar
Unemployment and Migration
Bihar’s chronic struggle with unemployment and high rates of labor migration remain major election flashpoints. According to recent NCRB data, over 35% of Bihar’s working-age population migrates out annually for work—an issue repeatedly raised by opposition leaders.
Welfare and Infrastructure
While NDA leaders tout achievements in road construction and rural electrification, critics point to incomplete projects and bureaucratic delays. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu’s son, has been vocal on the campaign trail about “jobs, education, and healthcare for all,” positioning these as core election planks.
Voter Sentiments and Political Stakes
The outcome in Bihar is considered pivotal for both the NDA and the opposition’s INDIA bloc in the 2024 general elections, as the state sends 40 MPs to Lok Sabha. Political observers note that economic distress, social justice narratives, and caste alliances will play decisive roles in voter preferences.
Perspectives from the Ground
Many local voters in Patna and Muzaffarpur express skepticism towards campaign rhetoric. Sunita Devi, a roadside vendor in Patna, said, “Every election politicians promise jobs and development. But after winning, the situation remains the same.”
Political analyst Sanjay Kumar of CSDS notes, “Both camps are using sharp rhetoric. But Bihar voters have seen cycles of promises before and will judge on delivery, not speeches.” Kumar adds that Lalu’s ‘weather of lies’ jibe is “a calculated attempt to sway undecided voters by questioning the PM’s credibility.”
BJP’s Response: Dismissing Allegations
Responding to the opposition’s criticism, Bihar BJP spokesperson Nikhil Anand said, “The NDA government’s report card on development is open for all to see. Leaders like Lalu Yadav lack credibility because of their own history of corruption and failed governance.”
Anand further accused the opposition of “playing politics with the lives of Bihar’s poor,” urging voters to reject what he termed “divisive and negative politics.”
