Kerala Congress Denies Tharoor’s Campaign Snub Claim

2 Mins read

Shashi Tharoor, the three-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram and a high-profile Congress leader, sparked debate earlier this week when he alleged in media interactions that senior party figures and key campaign planners had failed to include him in critical campaign outreach and events.

“Despite winning Thiruvananthapuram three times and being deeply committed to party goals, I was not invited to any major campaign planning sessions or rallies in the state,” Tharoor said during a press conference on June 17.

He further suggested that his absence from core campaign activities may have impacted the party’s ability to mobilize urban and youth voters in certain constituencies.

State Congress Reacts: “No Room for Differences”

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran quickly responded to Tharoor’s comments. In an official statement to reporters in Kochi, Sudhakaran dismissed the allegations as “misguided” and insisted that all prominent Congress leaders, including Tharoor, were involved in multifaceted campaign efforts across the state.

“Dr. Tharoor is a valued leader of the party, and there was never any intention to sideline him. Our campaign strategy was devised collectively, and all senior leaders had roles tailored to their strengths and schedules,” said Sudhakaran.

Sudhakaran also urged party members to focus on unity and discipline, warning that public displays of discord could damage Congress’s image ahead of key state elections in 2025.

Other Leaders Call for “Internal Resolution,” Downplay Rift

Several Congress MLAs, including V. D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, voiced similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to address grievances within party forums rather than in the media. “Airing internal matters publicly only gives ammunition to our political opponents,” Chennithala told Malayala Manorama.

Senior Congress observer and CWC member Oommen Chandy’s son, Chandy Oommen, also weighed in, noting that the campaign involved hundreds of events and that logistical constraints or overlapping schedules may have led to missed opportunities for participation.

The Wider Context: Congress Faces Pressure in Kerala

The dispute comes against the backdrop of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) retaining most seats in Kerala in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls but facing challenges from the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and a resurgent BJP, which nearly doubled its vote share in the state.

Political analysts suggest that Tharoor’s outspoken critique may reflect a turf war over the party’s future direction in Kerala, particularly as the Congress looks to appeal to younger and urban voters. “This episode is symptomatic of a broader churn within the state unit, where generational change and claims to leadership are creating new tensions,” said Prof. J. Prabhash, political commentator at Kerala University.

National Response: All India Congress Committee Monitors Situation

In New Delhi, senior AICC functionaries signaled concern but urged calm. “Kerala is a critical state for the Congress, and we expect all leaders to engage constructively. Differences of opinion should be addressed through the established party mechanism,” an AICC general secretary told The Indian Express on background.

There has so far been no indication of disciplinary action or formal mediation, but sources say the party high command remains watchful of any escalation.

Tharoor Remains Defiant

Despite the official pushback, Shashi Tharoor has stood by his statements. “Open dialogue is essential for a strong party. My only goal is to enhance Congress’s appeal and effectiveness,” Tharoor posted on X (formerly Twitter) late on June 18, igniting further conversation among supporters and critics alike.
