Wall Street Rallies as Big Earnings Beat Expectations – But Will Trump’s Trade War Crush It?

Wall Street Rises Despite Trade Fears: Is the Market Finally Out of the Woods?

Wall Street’s top indices saw a surprising lift on Thursday, thanks to some unexpected earnings boosts from major companies. Despite worries over U.S. President Donald Trump’s next move on trade and tariffs, investors are finding hope in big corporate earnings.

Big Corporate Earnings Light Up the Market

Earnings Surge for Pharma, Retail, and Tobacco Giants

While most analysts feared another wild ride on the stock market due to Trump’s unpredictable trade moves, some big companies proved to be a pleasant surprise for investors.

  • Eli Lilly, the drug giant, jumped 2.5% after it raised its annual profit forecast well above what analysts had expected.
  • Tapestry, the parent company of Coach, soared 15.3% after it raised its sales and profit predictions.
  • Philip Morris International, better known for its tobacco products, surged 8.6% after outperforming Wall Street’s earnings predictions.

These solid performances were enough to lift Wall Street’s mood, even as tensions around trade and tariffs continued to rumble.

Honeywell’s Major Shake-Up Sends Shares Tumbling

But not all companies are thriving. Honeywell, the aerospace and industrial giant, had a rough day. Its stock dropped 4.4% after announcing plans to split into three separate companies. To make matters worse, it lowered its sales and profit forecast for 2025, sparking fears that the company may not be as stable as investors had hoped.

All Eyes on Amazon: Can it Keep the Momentum Going?

As Wall Street stayed focused on earnings, Amazon is next in line to report its numbers. The tech titan has been under intense pressure to meet high expectations for its cloud computing business. If Amazon’s earnings disappoint, it could send shockwaves through the market and disrupt the current momentum.

Will Trump’s Trade War Push Wall Street Into Chaos?

While good earnings helped the market stay afloat, there’s still a dark cloud hanging over Wall Street – Trump’s trade war. Over the weekend, Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports, sending shockwaves through the global markets. However, he then suspended the tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, leading to more confusion.

Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital Management, said it’s not surprising that the market has been stuck in a cycle of optimism and pessimism, as investors try to predict what Trump will do next. “With so many moving parts in the new administration, it’s been hard to get a clear read on the market’s direction,” he said.

Will the Fed Cut Rates Again?

Many traders are betting that the Federal Reserve will take action on interest rates soon. While the Fed is expected to hold steady in March, most analysts believe it will cut rates in June. This could bring more relief to investors and further boost the market. But as with everything under Trump’s administration, nothing is certain.

Jobless Claims: A Small Spike or a Sign of Bigger Trouble?

Adding to the mix, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose last week, but not by much. While this was a bit concerning, it wasn’t a major shock. The real test will come on Friday, when the January nonfarm payrolls report is released. If the job market shows signs of slowing, it could send the market into a tailspin.

Mixed Results for Big Tech & More Market Drama

On a day filled with mixed results, several companies experienced dramatic price movements:

  • Qualcomm, the chipmaker, saw its stock fall 4.9% after the company warned of sluggish growth this year.
  • Ford Motor lost 6.9% after it projected massive losses in its electric vehicle and software divisions.
  • Skyworks Solutions took a huge hit, plunging 25.6% after its forecasted revenues fell short of analysts’ expectations.

With so much market drama, it’s clear that the year ahead will be anything but boring for Wall Street.

The Bottom Line: Is Wall Street on the Verge of a Major Breakthrough?

Despite the ups and downs, Wall Street managed to make modest gains on Thursday. The Dow Jones rose 8.51 points, or 0.04%, the S&P 500 climbed 13.84 points, or 0.23%, and the Nasdaq added 45.93 points, or 0.23%.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though, with sectors like consumer staples leading the way with a 0.9% rise, hitting a seven-week high.

With Amazon’s earnings set to release soon and the Federal Reserve’s next move looming, it’s clear that Wall Street’s uncertainty is far from over.
