A suspected member of the banned separatist outfit Babbar Khalsa International was killed on Monday night in a powerful blast near Ajnala, Amritsar district, police said. Authorities have launched a multi-agency probe into the explosion, which has heightened concerns about renewed extremist activity in Punjab.
Authorities Investigate Fatal Blast
According to local law enforcement, the incident occurred late Monday in the Kukranwala village area, approximately 25 kilometers from Amritsar city. The victim, identified preliminarily as Ranjeet Singh alias ‘Rana’, is suspected to have links to the Khalistani separatist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
“We received reports of a loud explosion at around 10:30 pm. Upon reaching the spot, we found one individual dead. Forensic experts and bomb disposal units are on-site,” said Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, addressing media on Tuesday morning. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also joined the investigation, officials confirmed.
Early Evidence Points to IED Explosion
Initial forensic analysis suggests the blast was triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED), although investigators are still determining whether it was accidental detonation or a targeted attack. Police sources, speaking on background, said the intensity of the explosion was such that the victim sustained grievous injuries, resulting in immediate death.
A senior intelligence official said, “The deceased was already under surveillance for suspected terror links. We are examining the possibility that he was either assembling an explosive device or transporting it when the device detonated prematurely.”
Renewed Concerns Over Khalistani Extremism
Babbar Khalsa International is a proscribed terrorist organisation, with a long history of violence and involvement in separatist activities in Punjab and abroad. The group, founded during the tumultuous Khalistani movement of the 1980s, has been implicated in multiple terror incidents and targeted assassinations.
The latest incident has revived anxieties about the resurgence of Khalistani extremist activity in Punjab, which has witnessed several targeted killings, arms seizures, and arrests of suspected militants in recent years.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann condemned the incident, stating, “Anti-national elements will not be allowed to disturb our hard-won peace. Law enforcement agencies are conducting a thorough investigation and will bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Multi-Agency Probe Underway
Security has been tightened in and around the blast site, and intelligence agencies are exploring possible links to international Khalistani networks. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which investigates offenses related to terrorism and national security, is collaborating with Punjab Police to determine if the blast is part of a broader terror plot.
Police have also not ruled out the possibility of accomplices in the vicinity. Forensic teams are collecting samples, while authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas for potential leads.
Residents React, Calls for Vigilance
Local residents described the explosion as “deafening,” sparking panic and confusion in the immediate aftermath. “We heard a loud bang and saw smoke. Police arrived quickly and cleared the area,” said Sukhwinder Kaur, a Kukranwala resident who lives near the scene.
Security analysts have urged increased vigilance in the border region, highlighting the persistent risk of cross-border arms smuggling and extremist infiltration from neighboring countries. Ajai Sahni, executive director at the Institute for Conflict Management, told reporters, “While this could have been accidental, it’s a sharp reminder that Punjab remains vulnerable to radical elements and external influences seeking to destabilize the region.”
Recent Escalation in Extremist Activity
This incident is the latest in a string of suspected terrorist-linked events in Punjab. In the past year, security agencies have uncovered multiple terror modules, seized caches of arms and grenades, and arrested operatives with alleged links to Pakistan-based handlers.
In March 2024, police arrested several individuals associated with BKI for plotting attacks on community leaders. Experts caution that such incidents are part of a deliberate attempt to revive separatist sentiments and internationalize the Khalistan issue, especially through the use of social media and diaspora networks.
