Prajwal Revanna Convicted for Rape in 14 Months

3 Mins read

In a historic judgment which has taken the entire political circle of Karnataka by storm, former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna was found guilty on Friday in a rape case lodged by a domestic help from KR Nagar, Mysuru. The verdict is just 14 months after the first complaint, an unusually quick resolution for a celebrity case of this nature involving a politician.

The Special Court for People’s Representatives in Bengaluru delivered the judgment and declared Revanna guilty under IPC Sections 376 and 506 for rape. The court said the quantum of punishment will be announced on Saturday, August 2.

A Breakdown in Court
The courtroom saw an emotionally draining moment as Revanna, son of former Karnataka minister H.D. Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, cried uncontrollably as the guilty verdict was pronounced. He wore a plain white kurta-pajama and was visibly distraught as he wept and was taken away from the court complex by security officials.

Sources informed that Revanna had been quite stoic during the trial, but the conviction left him speechless and stunned. His lawyers have confirmed that they will await the sentence on Saturday before considering an appeal in the High Court.

Timeline of the Case
The case goes way back to June 2024 when a 28-year-old domestic worker approached the police with a complaint of sexual assault by Revanna at a farmhouse in KR Nagar, where she had worked for a few months. The woman accused Revanna of repeatedly assaulting and threatening her.

The complaint led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which swiftly began its probe. The SIT collected digital evidence, CCTV footage, and forensic reports, and recorded statements from over 23 witnesses during the course of the investigation.

By August 2024, the SIT had presented a 2,000-page charge sheet consisting of 123 pieces of physical and documentary evidence, including WhatsApp chats, phone call records, and CCTV footage. The charge sheet presented a damning scenario of threats, manipulation, and abuse allegedly employed by Revanna to silence the survivor.

Legal and Political Ramifications
Prajwal Revanna’s conviction is one of the few examples in recent times when a charismatic political leader has been convicted within so short a period. The verdict has evoked a variety of reactions — from public anger to political distancing.

The JD(S), which had nominated Revanna as a star campaigner and at one point of time considered him a next-generation leader, has also kept mum since the verdict. A spokesperson of the party said, “The law has taken its course. The party stands with justice and condemns any act of violence against women.”

Congress and BJP leadership demanded that Revanna be expelled from public life forthwith and called for the JD(S) leadership to apologize publicly for the earlier defense of him. Some women’s rights groups welcomed the fast-track judgment as a move towards re-gaining confidence in the legal system for sexual assault survivors.

Swift Justice in a Slow System
Legal professionals have praised the court for its expeditiousness in finishing the trial in 14 months — a pace viewed as remarkable within the Indian legal system, where such trials tend to last years. Advocate Sunitha Rao, a gender rights activist and lawyer based in Bengaluru, had this to say:

This judgment serves as a strong precedent. It demonstrates that with the political will, committed courts, and aggressive investigation teams, justice can be delivered quickly — even in cases of powerful people.”
She also pointed out that as much as the conviction is a win, the survivor’s bravery in reporting and testifying against the high-profile accused should not be forgotten.

Effect on the Gowda Family
The guilty verdict has been a big setback for the Gowda family politically. Prajwal, the sole member of the family to have been elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019, was on track to assume greater responsibilities within the JD(S). His own political future is now uncertain, and the family has decided to remain mum about the verdict.

In-siders indicate that H.D. Deve Gowda is highly upset by the turns of events and has called off all public outings for the week ahead.

What Comes Next
The hearing on Saturday will decide whether Revanna is given the maximum punishment under Section 376, which can be between 10 years and life term. His lawyers will plead leniency, based on his political life and “cooperation” with the investigation. But the prosecution, armed with tidal waves of evidence, will likely insist on maximum punishment.
