IndiGo Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Bomb Threat

2 Mins read

IndiGo flight 6E-2211, carrying 178 passengers and six crew members, was diverted to Mumbai after pilots received information about a potential bomb on board. The aircraft, originally scheduled to land at 7:30 a.m., was given immediate clearance to land and parked at an isolated bay, where airport authorities activated full emergency protocols.

According to Mumbai Police officials, the threat was communicated through an anonymous email received during the flight’s approach to Mumbai. “Upon receiving the bomb threat information, we followed established security protocols to ensure the safety of everyone on board,” said an airport spokesperson during a press briefing.

Passengers Evacuated, Aircraft Searched

After the aircraft landed safely around 7:21 a.m., it was immediately cordoned off by security personnel. Passengers were evacuated using standard procedures and escorted to a secure holding area within the terminal. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), along with sniffer dogs and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) teams, conducted an extensive search of the aircraft and all luggage.

“All passengers were safely disembarked, and a thorough security check of the plane and baggage was carried out. So far, nothing suspicious has been found,” said DCP (Airport) Tushar Doshi, Mumbai Police. Authorities confirmed that no explosive materials or suspicious devices were discovered after several hours of checks.

Airlines, Authorities Commend Swift Response

IndiGo Airlines later issued a statement: “The safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our top priority. All necessary protocols were followed in coordination with security agencies. We regret any inconvenience caused to passengers and are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.”

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also praised airport authorities for their quick response. “Thanks to the swift and professional response of Mumbai airport staff and security agencies, all passengers and crew are safe. Measures have been taken to identify the source of the threat and strengthen airport security,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Increasing Incidence of Bomb Threats in Indian Aviation

This incident follows a string of bomb threats targeting Indian airports and flights in recent months, raising concerns about the safety and security of air travel in the region. Just last week, security was ramped up at Kolkata and Delhi airports following similar hoax threats.

Aviation security analyst Parvez Damania commented, “While most threats turn out to be hoaxes, each must be taken seriously. The robust and coordinated response by agencies at Mumbai airport demonstrates the high alertness and preparedness of Indian aviation security forces.”

Passengers Praised Crew for Calm, Efficient Handling

Several passengers expressed gratitude for the way cabin crew and authorities managed the situation. “The cabin crew kept us calm and provided continuous updates. We were a bit scared but felt taken care of,” said Manisha Verma, a passenger on the flight, speaking to ANI.

Another passenger added, “Though it caused some delays, I’m grateful for the professionalism shown by everyone involved.”

Ongoing Investigation

Mumbai Police have filed a criminal case and launched an investigation to trace the origin of the threatening email. Authorities are also reviewing the airport’s security protocols and surveillance footage to identify possible security lapses. No arrests have been made as yet.
