In a gruesome and appalling case that has left the academic and social communities of Bengaluru shaken, two college lecturers and their acquaintance have been arrested on charges of rape and blackmailing of a female student. The accused are said to have lured the student from her native place on the pretext of giving her study notes and then subjected her to serial sexual assault and emotional harassment.
A Vicious Trap Disguised as Academic Help
The episode was brought to light after the survivor, showing great courage, went to the Karnataka State Women’s Commission and lodged an official complaint. The abuse started, police officials say, when Narendra, a physics lecturer at a city-private college, invited the student to the city, promising to assist her with study material. The offer of academic assistance—a sanctuary for many a student—was misused to break her trust in the worst possible manner.
After reaching Bengaluru, the student was dropped at a friend’s house by Narendra. There, according to police, it is where he raped her. This took an even darker turn when Sandeep, a biology lecturer in the same college, allegedly extorted the student by sending her a video recording of the act and later also sexually assaulted her.
The Accused and the Aftermath
The third suspect, Anup, who is a close friend of the two lecturers, has also been taken into custody. Even though his immediate involvement in the assaults is still under probe, it is surmised that he helped or encouraged the criminal activity in some form or another. All three men are working at the same private college, an institution currently under intense public scrutiny for its hiring and monitoring of personnel.
The institutions’ names have not yet been released by the authorities, perhaps to conceal the identity of the survivor. Public outrage is increasing, though, with student unions and women’s rights groups calling for accountability, both from the perpetrators and the institutions that hired them.
Institutional Failure and Breach of Trust
What adds to the shock of this case is the misuse of power and trust by teachers—individuals who are traditionally perceived as mentors and guides. Students, particularly those coming from small towns to metropolitan cities like Bengaluru, tend to look up to their teachers for guidance and help. That sacred relationship of trust was totally shattered in this case.
“This is not only a criminal offense; it is a violation of all that education represents,” stated a member of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission. “We are coordinating with the police to ensure this survivor receives the justice she deserves. This case emphasizes the need for tighter background checks and surveillance in private schools.”
Legal Action Underway
The Bengaluru Police have filed a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), such as Section 376 (rape), Section 506 (criminal intimidation), and Section 354C (voyeurism), and several others. The investigating officers are also checking if the accused have previously committed similar offenses. The accused are presently in police custody, and the police have promised a fast-track investigation and trial in light of the gravity of the offense.
The Karnataka State Women’s Commission has also demanded counselling and legal assistance for the survivor, reaffirming that her mental health and long-term security should be given top priority.
Public Outrage and Online Reactions
The incident has evoked a huge outburst of anger and grief on social media. People have condemned the increasing cases of sexual violence in schools and colleges and demanded tougher laws and surveillance practices.
“Not just about one case—this is about the system. How many more students have to suffer before campus safety gets taken seriously?” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting a sentiment shared widely across the nation.
A Wake-Up Call for Educational Institutions
This incident has to be an eye-opener for all colleges in India. While the nation boasts of world-class educational facilities, such horrific violations of trust expose a sinister undertow—a one in which power, silence, and manipulation can run free if mechanisms of accountability are lax.
Universities and colleges have to make student safety the priority, including:
Having zero-tolerance towards sexual harassment
Having a facility for anonymous reporting
Carrying out background checks on all teachers and staff
Establishing internal complaints committees (ICC) under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act guidelines
has to say: Justice Must Prevail
To date, the student is receiving medical and psychological treatment. What has been done to her is unimaginable, and her courage in speaking out requires admiration and institutional support. Survivors of this kind of abuse have too long been silenced—either by fear, shame, or institutional indifference.
In this instance, her voice has incited action. The arrests are a positive step, but the road to justice, reform, and healing is only just begun.
Let this case not fade from public consciousness. Let it serve as a tipping point—where schools at last become safe havens for students to learn, not snares for exploitation.
If you or someone you know is experiencing sexual abuse or harassment, please contact helplines or the Women’s Commission of your state. Support, legal assistance, and counseling are provided.
