Adani Transmission Limited (ATL) has successfully completed the Kharghar-Vikhroli Transmission Line (KVTL) project in Mumbai, aimed at bolstering the city’s power infrastructure and ensuring reliable electricity supply. The project includes a 400 kV grid within Mumbai’s municipal geography and is designed to enhance power import capability, improve grid reliability, and ensure the stability of power supply.
Enhancing Power Reliability:
- The KVTL project is viewed as a vital solution to mitigate grid failures, such as those witnessed in Mumbai on February 27, 2022, and October 12, 2020, which resulted in power outages in various localities.
- The project is expected to add 1,000 MW of reliable power supply to Mumbai, reducing the likelihood of future grid failures and ensuring the uninterrupted operation of transportation systems like bullet trains, Metro Rail, and city railways, as well as supporting commercial and residential establishments.
Key Project Components:
- The KVTL comprises approximately 74 circuit kilometers of 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines, along with a 1,500 MVA 400 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Vikhroli, marking the first 400 KV substation of its kind in Mumbai.
- The substation at Vikhroli boasts a compact design that vertically stacks 400 kV and 220 kV GIS, minimizing space requirements.
Overcoming Challenges with Technology:
- The project faced several challenges, particularly in dealing with difficult terrain. However, Adani Transmission overcame these challenges through the use of technology and innovation.
- For example, six towers were constructed in creeks using heavy rigs on floating barges, and height restrictions in urban areas were addressed by adopting special horizontal configuration towers.
Project Route and Elements:
- The KVTL project originates in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai, traverses urban locations, and terminates at Vikhroli in Mumbai city.
- Key elements of the project include the 400 kV/220 kV GIS Vikhroli substation, air insulated system switchyard at Kharghar, 400 kV double/multi-circuit Kharghar-Vikhroli line, 400 kV loop in loop out (LILO) on Talegaon-Kalwa line at Vikhroli, and 220 kV LILO on Trombay-Salsette line at Vikhroli.
Adani Transmission’s Scope:
- Adani Transmission Limited (ATL) is the largest private transmission company in India, with a cumulative network of 18,875 circuit kilometers. Of this, 14,279 circuit kilometers are operational, and 4,596 circuit kilometers are in various stages of construction.
- ATL also operates a distribution business, serving more than 12 million consumers in Mumbai.
The completion of the KVTL project represents a significant milestone in strengthening Mumbai’s power infrastructure and ensuring a more reliable and stable electricity supply for the city’s residents and businesses.
